Illustrated glossary · All-season vs all-terrain tires

All-season, all-terrain and mud-terrain tires, illustrated

All-season describes seasonal use, while all-terrain describes a mix of road and off-road use. Mud-terrain tires have larger gaps between tread blocks to clear mud. These names describe different design goals, and a tire can carry more than one description.

Separate snow marking

Snow-test status remains unknown

All-season describes seasonal use. It does not establish the same snow-test result as the mountain snowflake. The marking control is independent so you can compare the two questions.

Invented tread patterns showing design differences. They are not product drawings or measured grip comparisons. A snow symbol is separate from the tread category.

Tread gaps help clear loose material

balance road use with travel on loose surfaces. designs use more open patterns to shed mud. Those design choices can change road noise and road behavior; individual tire testing matters more than the category alone.

All-terrain does not mean winter-rated

The three-peak mountain snowflake indicates that a tire meets a standardized snow-traction requirement. Some all-terrain tires carry it and others do not. M+S alone does not establish the same tested performance.

A snow symbol is not an ice score

The snow marking does not promise stopping performance on ice or identical results across tires. Rubber compounds, tread details and conditions all matter. Check the exact tire model as well as its size and markings.
