Illustrated glossary · AWD and electric AWD
How does AWD work? Electric vs mechanical AWD
All-wheel drive can power both axles, but the label does not describe one universal mechanism. Some systems use a mechanical driveshaft and rear coupling. Others use a separate electric rear motor with no driveshaft connecting the axles.

Rear helps
When the system senses a slippery road or a tire losing grip, it sends to the rear wheels.
How this works
The rear motor responds automatically. This shows power flow, not measured grip or a fixed split.
Toyota: “…If the system deems the roads as slippery or it senses loss of tire grip, the distribution of torque to the rear wheels is then controlled…”
Each vehicle example uses its own manufacturer-specific demonstration. Electrical paths and mechanical driveshafts stay separate; the diagrams do not claim a universal torque split.
Follow the connection to the rear wheels
In an electric rear-axle system such as the Camry’s, electricity supplies a separate motor at the rear. In a mechanical system, a driveshaft carries turning force toward the . Both can be called , although the parts and control behavior differ.
A hybrid badge does not tell you the AWD type
The CR-V hybrid uses a mechanical rear drive path. The Camry hybrid uses a separate rear electric motor. A battery EV such as the dual-motor Model Y has its own arrangement again. Check the selected vehicle and , rather than assuming every hybrid works alike.
The amount of assistance changes
Systems can vary their output with demand and conditions. A single fixed front/rear split is not a good description of every situation. AWD can help a vehicle accelerate with available grip; it does not bypass the grip limits of the tires or guarantee a shorter stop.
