Illustrated glossary · Hybrid vs plug-in hybrid
Hybrid vs plug-in hybrid: do you need to charge it?
A conventional hybrid does not need to plug in: its engine and regenerative braking supply the battery. A plug-in hybrid can also charge from an external source and generally has a larger battery for more electric driving.

Situation
This shows possible electrical paths, not a required operating mode. A hybrid’s engine can also have a mechanical route to the wheels, depending on its design.
“Plugged in” is disabled because this conventional hybrid has no charging connection.
The drawings compare energy sources, not battery sizes or driving ranges. Actual plug-in hybrids can start their engines even with charge remaining.
Recovering energy is not an extra fuel source
Both types can recover some energy while slowing. The engine can also supply electricity. A conventional ’s fuel ultimately supplies the energy used for driving, with regeneration reducing waste. The phrase self-charging does not mean the car creates energy for free.
A plug gives you another way to supply energy
External charging lets a start with energy from the grid. How much electric driving you get depends on the vehicle and conditions. When usable charge runs low, it can continue in hybrid operation, subject to fuel and the vehicle’s operating requirements.
Hybrid type and transmission type are separate choices
Some hybrids use Toyota-style power-split . Honda’s two-motor system works differently. Other hybrids use stepped automatic transmissions. The word hybrid does not tell you which one is fitted, nor whether the is powered electrically.
