Illustrated glossary · Horsepower vs torque

Horsepower vs torque: what is the difference?

Torque is turning force. Horsepower measures how quickly that turning force does work. The same torque produces more horsepower at a higher engine speed, so peak torque and peak horsepower describe different points on an engine’s output curve.

See how it works

Hold steady and raise engine speed. Then change torque at the same speed.

114 hp from 300 lb-ft at 2,000 rpm

Torque × rpm ÷ 5,252 = mechanical horsepower. Raise rpm without changing torque to see power increase. These inputs describe a calculation, not a real engine’s available output.

A units demonstration with invented inputs, not an engine output curve. Real engines cannot supply any chosen torque at any chosen speed. Figures are mechanical horsepower and pound-feet.

Engine speed connects the two

For torque in pound-feet, equals torque times rpm divided by about 5,252. At 300 pound-feet and 2,000 rpm, that is about 114 hp. Double the speed while holding torque steady and power doubles. also measure power; one mechanical horsepower is about 0.746 kW.

Gearing changes the force at the tires

The and multiply turning force while reducing rotational speed. Vehicle weight, gearing and available tire grip all affect acceleration. An engine’s peak torque number alone cannot tell you which car accelerates faster.

Combined hybrid output is a separate rating

An engine and its electric motors may reach their individual peaks at different speeds. Battery and control limits also matter. Use the maker’s combined system rating rather than adding the individual peak numbers yourself.
