Illustrated glossary · Turbo vs supercharger
Turbo vs supercharger: what pushes the extra air?
A turbocharger uses exhaust flow to drive a compressor that pushes more air into the engine. A conventional supercharger drives its compressor mechanically from the engine. A naturally aspirated engine has neither device.
See how it works
Switch the air supply and follow what drives the compressor.
Air supply
The two gas paths stay separate. The shaft carries mechanical power between them; it does not carry exhaust into the intake.
Simplified air and drive paths. Exhaust gas stays separate from fresh intake air. The drawing does not model boost, response time, cooling or fuel use.
A turbo has two separate gas paths
Exhaust turns a turbine. A shaft joins that turbine to a compressor in the fresh-air path. Exhaust does not flow through the compressor into the engine. The compressed intake air is commonly cooled before entering the cylinders.
A belt can drive the compressor instead
A conventional takes mechanical power from the engine to compress intake air. The energy source differs from an exhaust-driven . Electrically assisted designs add other arrangements, so these drawings cover the conventional mechanisms.
Extra air needs an engine designed to use it
With appropriate fuel and controls, more air lets an engine produce more output from a given . A turbo badge alone establishes neither fuel savings nor a particular curve. Compare the actual engine’s ratings and the vehicle’s mileage.
