Illustrated glossary · Adaptive cruise and lane assist
Does adaptive cruise control steer? ACC vs lane assist
Adaptive cruise control adjusts speed to help maintain a following gap. Lane centering assists with steering within the lane. Lane keeping assistance addresses unintended lane departure. A vehicle can combine them, but they do different jobs.

Change the assistance function, then introduce a slower car or a lane drift.
Assistance function
Situation
ACC can reduce speed for a detected slower vehicle. The driver must respond if the system does not. These controls isolate each function; a real vehicle can combine them.
A functional comparison, not a prediction of detection distance, braking or steering performance. The driver must supervise and respond; operating limits differ by vehicle.
Speed control is not steering control
responds to a detected vehicle ahead within its operating limits. It can adjust acceleration and braking to manage the following gap. That function alone does not keep a car centered through a bend.
Lane keeping and lane centering differ
assistance intervenes against unintended departure. Lane centering supplies ongoing steering assistance to help stay near the lane’s center. Makers sometimes use similar names for different functions, so read what the specific system does.
Check the package and its conditions
A branded assistance can combine several functions. Speed ranges, lane-marking requirements, stop-and-go behavior and driver monitoring vary. A camera, an assistance badge or a traffic-jam feature does not establish every other function is fitted.
