Illustrated glossary · Trailer brake controllers
What does a trailer brake controller do?
A trailer brake controller sends an electrical braking command to compatible trailer brakes. The hitch pulls the trailer, and Tow/Haul changes the truck’s behavior, but neither replaces the controller needed for those trailer brakes.
See how it works
Apply the truck brakes with the controller connected, then remove the electrical connection.
Controller circuit
The bar shows an illustrative signal, not braking force or a setup value. A working controller, compatible trailer brakes and the correct wiring are separate from the hitch and tow rating.
A compatible electric-brake trailer with a simplified proportional command. Command bars are not stopping force, gain settings or stopping distances. Surge-brake trailers use another mechanism.
The electrical path is separate from the hitch
The controller regulates output through the to operate compatible brakes. A connector or tow hitch alone does not establish that a controller is fitted and working. Verify the truck, wiring and trailer together.
Controllers can decide output differently
A proportional controller varies output with the tow vehicle’s braking demand or deceleration. A time-based controller ramps output over time. Each requires setup under its own instructions; this diagram supplies no gain recommendation.
Tow ratings and braking are separate checks
A controller does not increase , hitch limits or the manufacturer’s . Trailer brake requirements depend on the combination and local rules. Use the vehicle and trailer instructions for equipment and setup.

2026 Ford F-150
These builds contain the integrated trailer brake controller component. The towing tool checks weight limits; it does not model controller setup or stopping distance.
