Illustrated glossary · Independent vs solid axle
Independent suspension vs a solid axle: what moves?
Independent suspension lets the wheels on one axle move vertically without a rigid axle housing tying them together. A solid axle joins the wheel ends with a rigid assembly, so lifting one side changes the angle of that assembly.
See how it works
Raise the bump under the left tire, then switch layouts.
Layout on this axle
The left wheel moves through its own links. A real sway bar and the moving body can still couple the two sides; independent does not mean completely isolated.
An end-on geometric sketch with the body held still. Arms, springs and travel are simplified. It does not predict ride comfort, wheel alignment or a real vehicle’s articulation.
Watch the connection across the car
In the independent sketch, separate links connect each wheel carrier to the body. In the sketch, the wheel ends share one rigid housing. A suspension layout is a description of those connections, not the number of powered wheels.
A vehicle can use both
The Bronco has independent front suspension and a solid . The Wrangler uses solid axles at both ends. Check the front and rear layouts separately rather than assigning one layout to the whole vehicle.
Travel depends on the whole design
Springs, , links and all affect movement. A solid axle does not mean both tires must rise the same distance. A changes wheel-speed relationships; it does not disconnect the suspension.

About these examples
Year-specific examples from our catalogs, not a complete market list. A missing vehicle or trim does not establish that the feature is unavailable. Each illustration and link uses the shown build. Unknown prices stay unknown.

Our Wrangler data has the gas Wrangler's engines, transmissions, 4x4 systems, axles, wheels, tires, bumpers, tops and some of its packages. It doesn't have every package, the 392 V8 or the 4xe plug-in hybrid yet, so something missing from this page may still be offered.
